Whereas humans have self-adjusting eye lenses, horses must move their heads to adjust their lenses. To see far away, a horse will raise its head (for example, when approaching a jump). To see close in front, a horse will lower its head and bring in its nose (when walking over a log, for instance).

Females can come into heat (estrus) as early as their yearling year (between one and two years old). The estrous cycle takes place about every 21 days, with a period of 5-7 days when the mare is receptive to a stallion. The last 24-48 hours of this receptive period is when the mare usually ovulates.
